MUTUAL INFLUENCES OF SMALL GROUPS

According to John Donne, “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of continent, a part of main. This particular quotation is seen widely used in our world today, which its content is clearly visible and true. Individuals are known to be the integral part of any group, for instance; families, study groups etc. Their personal commitments toward the objectives of the group determine the total productivity of such an entity. On the contrary, the sum total of the efficiency which such group produces generally, in return influences the individualism of the members that made up the group.  Therefore, this piece of essay has one simple aim; to unveil the mutual influences I experienced being in a small group called “Potential Builders International”.

Small groups are estimated to consist between three to nine persons. Generally, group can be defined as two or more individuals who are connected by, and within social relationships (Donelson R. Forsyth, 2010). Considering the interaction within the small-group context, it involves sharing and exchanging of knowledge, experiences, skills, ideas and opinions towards the betterment of the entire group. In our lecture note, small group communication is stated to be interaction that involves three to nine persons who are working together to achieve an interdependent goals (Miss Nita, 2011).

Consequently, there are three main implications derived from the later sentence. First, it becomes evident as to discover that members are interdependent - the objectives of the group will not be achieved without individual contributions. In other words, they rely on each other to have a maximum performance. Similarly, the smaller the group, the more each one in the group becomes aware of the co-existence among them to get task done collectively. Next, you will find that effective interaction is the key tool that pools and coordinates the group together.

Potential Builders International is a non-for-profit group formed and initiated by me with the aim of rediscovering destinies, and empowering young people for a better tomorrow. It consists of seven members with five boys and two girls. This group can be said to be task-oriented in nature and focus.  As the founder, I became the major influence within the group.   One of the avenues I exerted my influence was via affection, knowing that it is the secret road map to get into people’s heart. In the first place, I needed to sell the idea to them, and secondly, they have to assimilate the vision and mission of the entity when bought the idea. The reason may be very simple; it is meant for all to have a mental picture of our destination. This vivid and clear mental image will help us to arrive at the destination quickly and safely.

However, this cannot be achieved without effective communication and love tool. I was able to influence everyone successfully with these two fundamental principles which yielded a great dividend for us. Aftermath, I discover that such influence is not achieved through manipulation, but via proper articulation of purpose. What a learning process for me that will ever remain indelible in my success story.

Other than that, I was influenced largely by these pools of people of like-minded and master mind. It was a two way thing. Literally, in life everyone was designed to function differently and uniquely. These differences in attributes make each person a model when such exceptional characters are enhanced.  Here, you discover the influence is based wholly on the person’s knowledge. One thing that affected me tremendously was, I learnt to stretch myself mentally and otherwise to reach further in results if I should coordinate the activities of the organization perfectly. The results gained began to erase one of my deficiencies which was a concern to me over the years– the fear of public speaking and contribution. From thence, I became a good contributor in group discussions.

On the whole, working as a team polishes each of us pre-existing tendencies; the average tendency of everyone within the organization was strengthened. The success of our objectives depends entirely on our ability on those our set objectives. Though, there are combinations of explicit and implicit exhibition of attitudes and motives, but the conformity that exist within the group overrides this weakness. Also, the most influencers in this organization have good command of communication skills, and they wisely utilize it. These persons are more flexible in nature, in coordinating and presenting solid ideas, and quickly synergize those ideas for efficient results.

All things considered, having examined broadly the interaction that measured between me and the Potential Builders’ members as a group. One can simply deduced that group pioneers more extreme and risky decisions for purpose accomplishment than when a single person is involved. Also, influence is a two way thing – from individual to group and from group to individuals.

It’s time to rip off blanket labels so we can see each other for who we are.
WHAT’S up, my nigga?” said Jackie Chan with a silly smile in Rush Hour, the 1998 buddy cop action comedy.
Chan was cast as a policeman from China who tried to be “cool” in imitating the greeting used by his black partner (played by Chris Tucker) on his Afro-American friends.
But of course, Chan almost set off a racial fight, since the “N” word is the equivalent of going nuclear, when used on Afro-Americans
It’s funny how normally slur words can be taken as a friendly joke when used on our own race.
I once had an Indian colleague who would scold anybody (of all races) who did not keep their promises as giving untrustworthy “janji keling” (or “Indian promise”). If I had used the same words, I would be liable for racial harassment. But she carried it off with such aplomb that everybody laughed.
Earlier this week, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal called upon the country’s bumiputras to “gain respect from others” by staying away from the social ills they are frequently associated with.
Rasli Kechik from Kedah. But beyond flags, have we been liberated from racialism? - Bernama
“Innocent babies are abandoned because of our actions,” Bernama quoted him as saying. “It seems like others aren’t involved in this ... we are the ones street racing, smoking ganja (marijuana) and evensyabu.”
Similarly, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had repeatedly criticised the Malays, at Umno general assemblies no less, for “not working hard enough” to uplift their economic status and “depending too much” on government hand-outs.
Now, surely these two political paragons are not being racist or “anti-Malay”. Rather, they are offering “constructive criticism”, that is, honest feedback, so as to improve things.
Yet, during the Malaysian Chinese Economic Congress last week, when a constructive suggestion to improve our global competitiveness was made – that bumiputras should be given price preferences, rather than rigid 30% quotas, in certain economic sectors – a certain racial “rights” group called it “seditious”.
What is racism anyway? Are Black Americans cool? As rappers, they seem so. Yet others call them lazy layabouts who lepak by chanting rhythmic poetry. What about Obama?

Stop glorifying Mat Rempits

The (North Pole Free Fall) expedition is among the latest controversial moves by Umno to engage youths, especially mat rempit, in a series of baffling activities… . This includes a 50,000-strong carnival gathering which never took off, a road trip tainted by sex and booze allegations and a proposed programme to reward mat rempit for nabbing snatch thieves

                               irresponsible act on the street

Again and again we are sending a wrong message to the children of tomorrow concerning what good behavior for our youth should be. Wrong model.

Why are we allowing UMNO Putera to glorify Mat Rempits and reward them with something they do not deserve? Don’t these youth leaders know what education means and how to educate these ‘damaged’ youth? We do not understand what being “fair but firm” means in educating troubled youth. Worse, we do not understand the root cause of why children fail in school but graduate to become Mat and Minah Rempits or “Alongs” and all kinds of human beings alienated by the system we built together.

The 50,000 strong gathering, the name-change to Mat Cemerlang, the proposed drag race circuit, and now the North Pole jump — what are these for in the name of ‘education for good citizenship’? How many will 50,000 mat rempits multiply into in a decade? What will be the consequence for our nation already falling apart from corruption and mismanagement?
We need more than just quick fix solution to the issue of ‘juvenile delinquency’ that is getting out of control. We need a “zero-tolerance policy” on “rempitizing behaviors”.

Don’t the ministry of education know what the taxpayers want for the education system? Why not spend money preparing good teachers to prepare good curriculum and teaching strategies to deal with the children of the Millennium generation? Why not spend money making sure that all schools meet the minimum standards of technology, resources, safety, and teacher competency? Why not beef up the “rempit division” of the police force?

Why continue to arrogantly trumpet pseudo-humanistic approach to curing the disease of rempitism when there are better long-lasting ways we can employ to make sure students do not become what they shouldn’t be becoming?

    Kuala Lumpur Malaysia Skyline Night

Group Three (3)
Published February 11, 2012

Environment is known to be the situations, events, people and other things
that influences the way we live or work. It could be what surrounds a
thing, for instance, physical element or natural environment.

Malaysia is recently seen as a nation in its twilight as a transitional nation with world class cities. However, there are several factors opposing its serene environmental sustainability. It ranges from influx of ill mannered people from their neighboring countries, inadequate refuse disposal, inefficiency in replacing worn-out refuse bin, and insufficient awareness on environmental cleanliness.

Kuala Lumpur is s among the fastest growing metropolitan regions in the Asian Continent, in terms of population and economy, the federal capital, and most populous city in Malaysia. The city covers an area of 243 km2 (94 sq mi), has an estimate of 1.6 million.Despite its status, a lot need to be done to sustain its environmental friendly nature.

Rated as an alpha world city, Kuala Lumpur is the cultural, financial and economic centre of Malaysia due to its position as the capital as well as being a key city. Besides, Kuala Lumpur was ranked 48th among global cities by Foreign Policy's 2010 Global Cities and was ranked 67th among global cities for economic and social innovation by the 2thinknow Innovation Cities Index in 2010.

The city has played host to many international sporting, political and cultural events including the 1998 Commonwealth Games and the Formula One World Championship. In addition, Kuala Lumpur is home to the tallest twin buildings in the world, the Petronas Twin Towers, which have become an iconic symbol of Malaysia's futuristic developments.

Besides, unlike Singapore as a world class nation, the country Malaysia gave birth to, is doing everything to sustain and maintain the orderliness and their environmental friendliness. Malaysia is yet to imbibe that habit. Maintenance culture is the only way to retain the taste as an alpha nation among its cities especially Kuala Lumpur.

SEGiNews Daily was on tour around Kota Raya axis,  we were shock to discover wet, slimy and stinking  rubbishes mostly from  restaurants. "This  is another threatening vices. Sadly, it feed rats, which has turn Kuala Lumpur to a  city of rats" said by Uzoma Victor.

We found almost six places that dirty dishes are washed in big basins of water to be sent back to the restaurant outlets for customer use. At every corner is a rubbish bin available but people throw their bags of rubbish carelessly. As a result, the waste lay open outside the bin, thus creating more mess and stink.

The condition became worse when rats scurry along the drains and feast on the leftovers and open rubbish bags along the walk lanes. The unfortunate side is that this scenarios have escaped the eyes of the authorities in charge.

Adequate measures need to be putting in place to checkmate these ills. Government however got a whole lots of work to do to sustain their place. Maintenance system becomes a key tool to achieve such environmental sustainability.  Also, for their cities to be  healthy places for tourists and citizens alike to dwell.

Zebra Dung New Fuel Source

Zebra
Zebra poop could one day fuel the cars and buses on our streets!

Thanks to zebra dung, cars could one day run on fuel made from old newspapers.
Today, we use mostly oil and gas to run our cars; oil and gas come from fossilized plants and animals. But fossil fuels are expensive, and there aren’t enough of them. Scientists are looking for cheaper and more plentiful fuels.
David Mullin is a biology professor at a university in New Orleans. He and his students are trying to make a fuel from plants. Plant-based fuels are called “biofuels.”
He knew that if he could break down “cellulose,” he could turn it into a fuel that could run vehicles.
So Mullin and his students went to the zoo. They collected animal droppings—poop. Their hope was that they would find a type of poop that was able to break down the cellulose and create fuel.
Mullin found what he was looking for in the African zebra pen.
Zebra droppings contain special microbes – tiny living cells, which you can’t see with the human eye. These microbes live in the zebra’s stomach; they help it digest the plants it eats.
Zebra
This zebra belongs to the sub species, Grevy's zebra. There are two other subspecies of zebra, the mountain zebra and the plains zebras. The quagga subspecies is extinct. I

Mullin found that those microbes were able to break down the cellulose in newspaper, creating a type of fuel. Zebra microbes can also break down the cellulose from cotton, twigs and seeds.
Mullin is now working to make the zebra poop turn other sources of cellulose, like wood chips, into fuel. One day, cars and trucks could be running on cheaper, more eco-friendly fuels—thanks to the African zebra.

Federal Capital Territory @ 38

A co-ordinated march past during the FT Day celebrations

 >The Making of the Federal Capital Territories (Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and
Putrajaya) that marks the 38th Birthday and Creation  of these Malaysian
Most Prosperous Cities

Kuala Lumpur  Feb 4 - The 2012 Federal Territories Day celebration was held in Merdeka Square and the place was the centre of attention of all the citizens and tourists for the day. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak officiated at the ceremony participated by 94 contingents with 8,000 members representing government departments, schools, higher education institutions, corporate bodies, non-government bodies and banks. Together with the Prime Minister, his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin was present too.

The theme for the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya is “Rakyat Bersatu, Wilayah Persekutuan Maju” (Unity for Progressive Federal Territories). The celebration included a procession of antique cars, superbikes and Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s cavalry contingent. The Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry, KL City Hall, Putrajaya Corporation, Labuan Corporation, Federal Territories’ director of Land and Mines Office and Federal Territories Sports Council gave the city folks gifts such as discounts on compound, visits to public places, quit rent and fines and free rental for sports facilities and multi-purpose halls and free coupons.

A varied program of activities and competitions will be organized throughout the Federal Territory Day Celebrations, held from the 28th January until the 29th June 2012. These events and program have been organized for the purpose of encouraging active local community participation and inculcating the spirit of solidarity among city dwellers and to plant the seeds of love and affection for the Federal Territories.

The Information Communications and Culture Ministry organized a program called Kuala Lumpur Art Street for two days beginning on the 28th January. Thirty booths are selling paintings, antiques, used books, old CDs and records, accessories for women and traditional food. It was highlighted with performances in the form of street music, singing, dancing, clowns, buskers and ‘human statue.

The Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail’s theme and visions were the main focus of this year’s celebration. "This is our (KL folk) celebration. This is the time when we reflect on what we have achieved as a city and what can be done to improve and it's obvious that we (City Hall) can't do this alone.” He said.

"If we are not united, than we will achieve less than we should.

"On our part, we carry out daily operations including cleanliness and maintenance, but if the people do not appreciate this, then it will be difficult to achieve a better city.

"Then you can see people litter as they please and abuse public facilities, including pedestrian walkways.

“Yes, we run the city by ensuring the upkeep and maintenance of infrastructures, but how do we change people's bad attitudes and behavior?

"Attitudes like riding a motorcycle on the pedestrian walkway or parking vehicles on it, for instance. Yet people still blame us and simply say that we don't enforce the law when they see this.

"You can blame us for faulty street lights and bad roads as maintaining them is part of our job, but can you blame us for the bad attitude of others?" he asked. (Above dialogues are cited from Bernama News).

Most of the ideas proposed are being carried out, including the basic things that have direct effect and impact on everyone living in the city. These include cleanliness, landscape beautification, road maintenance, flood mitigation projects and pedestrian walkway network. Fuad wants to get everything in order based on the RM2.3 billion budget for this year. This will not only improve the life of city folk but also the image of the city as part of the efforts to become a livable city by 2020.

Let all of us join together to continuously celebrate FEDERAL TERRITORY DAY as a special Day, with pride, joy and in the spirit of oneness! We should support and collaborate with the government to organize such subsequent events and programs by actively taking part in it.
