8-year-old twins who've
become the youngest students ever to pass the advanced Maths A level
Peter
and Paula Imafidon both passed A level maths despite being at primary school
and having had just three years of formal education. The
twins from east London sat the exams, which are normally taken by 18-year-olds,
11 years ahead of the curriculum.
They
said that they had found lessons with their peers boring. They
said: "Sometimes at school, the teacher goes a bit too slow for us, but we
just encourage and help our friends if they get stuck instead."
A
spokesman for the family said they were "overwhelmed" with the
results, but would not reveal their exact grades. He
said: "They both passed well.
"It
was not down to any pressure from their parents, the children just like adding
up and playing with numbers. They are both really happy with what's
happened." At six, Peter and Paula became some of the youngest children to
pass GCSEs. They managed G grades in statistics. Paula went one better in maths
with an F, Peter getting another G.
They
attend a state school in Waltham Forest, but were given extra lessons at a
centre run by the Excellence in Education group. Three
years ago their sister Samantha passed GCSEs in maths and statistics, with D
and C grades respectively at the age of seven. At the
time she was believed to be the youngest child to pass two GCSEs in one
sitting.
Peter
Dunn, a spokesperson for the International Gateway for Gifted Youth based at
the University of Warwick, said: "Often gifted young people can feel
isolated but will prosper when given more opportunities to meet and interact
with other gifted young people in situations in which they can both socialise
and learn."
In 1981
Ruth Lawrence entered the record books by achieving a grade A in her Pure
Mathematics A-level when she was only nine-years-old. By the age of 13 she
became the youngest British person ever to earn a first-class degree and the
youngest known graduate of Oxford University.
Last
summer a nine-year-old March Boedihardjo became the youngest child to gain two
A-grade A levels in maths and further maths. March was given a place to study
at Hong Kong Baptist University.
